Learn to Sew Placemats! | Easy Rectangle or Oval Placements | DIY Placemats

It's June! Does it feel like it? While you may have had to be inside from March to now, that doesn't mean your house can't be updated to reflect summer! This week I took on the task of making placemats. Growing up, my mom would sew placements for us, and it would take her no time at all! In this tutorial, I will show you how to sew two different styles of placemats so you can decide if you want rectangle ones or oval ones! They are a great way to learn sewing on a curve as well as how to use quilted fabric! With that said, let's get started and make some placemats!

Video Instructions

Rectangle Placemats

Items Needed for One Placemat:

  • 2 Pieces of 18 inch by 13 inch Cotton Fabric
  • 1 Piece of 18 inch by 13 inch Batting
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron
  • Ironing Board
Step 1: Cut out fabric, and layer two pieces of cotton fabric right sides together. Place the piece of batting on top of the fabric, and pin together.
Step 2: Sew around the placemat leaving one of the shorter ends opened.
Step 3: Turn out the placemat. If you'd like a crisper look, iron the placemat.
Step 4: Fold in the seam on the open end of the placemat, so 1/2 an inch of fabric is now in the placemat. Iron this down so the crease stays. Once ironed, pin the opening closed.
Step 5: Take a top stitch around the entire placemat, then repeat with a second top stitch about an inch into the placemat to give it some design.
Step 6: Continue with as many placemats as you need!

Oval Placemats

Items Needed for One Placemat:

  • 1 Piece of Quilted Fabric* (Pattern Piece Available at the end)
  • Thread
  • 55 inch Bias Tape**
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine
Step 1: Cut out a piece of quilted fabric according to the pattern piece.
Step 2: Pin the bias tape around the quilted fabric.
Step 3: Sew around the bias tape as close to the edge as you can.
Step 4: Trim the seams, and enjoy your placemat!

* If you don't have quilted fabric, you can make your own! Take two pieces of fabric and place batting in between. Using your sewing machine sew lines in a diagonal pattern or any pattern you would like!

**If you don't have bias tape on hand, you can make your own! Gather cotton fabric and cut out a 2 inch by 55 inch strip. Fold the strip in half and iron it down. Fold each half in half and iron it again so that you have a strip that has no raw edges. Video instructions!
