How to Sew A Decorative Throw Pillow Case! How to Sew a Pillow Case | Free Pillow Case Pattern and Instructions

If you are anything like me, this quarantine has you finding old projects that need to be done around your home. One of those projects for me was finding a pillow mold and fabric that had been in my family's fabric supply for almost seven years! Well, I finally sat down and made the pillow so that not only was it off my list but I also had a fun new element to add to the couch! So that is what this week's sewing tutorial is...how to sew a decorative pillow case!

Video Instructions

Items Needed

  • Pillow Mold
  • Fabric for the Front and Back of the pillow
    • For the fabric size, measure the width and height of the pillow and add one inch. The pillow I use for the pictures is 18 inch by 18 inch, so I cut the fabric out to be 19x19
  • Decorative edging
    • For the length, measure around the pillow for each edge and add 4 inches. For my pillow, it was 72 inches around plus 4 inches so 76 inches long.
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Sewing Machine
Step 1: Cut out two pieces of fabric and one piece of edging.
Step 2: Pin the edging to one side of the fabric. To do this, place the fabric right side up and lay the edging around the fabric. Whichever side of the edging you want to be facing out, place that toward the inside of your pillow (See pictures!) Once it is pinned, sew the edging to the pillow.
Step 3: Lay the back of the fabric right side down, so that the right sides of the pillow case are together. Pin three edges leaving one open for turning. Once pinned, sew the three edges.
Step 4: Turn the pillow case right side out, and place the pillow into the case!
Step 5: For the one edge that is open, flip the edges in on themselves so you remove the raw edges. Pin this down, and sew. You can sew across the seam using either a machine or by hand sewing! I hand sewed the seam closed for mine.
Step 6: Enjoy your pillowcase and decorative pillow!
