Understanding Adhesive Sequin Fabric:

Adhesive sequin fabric is a type of fabric that features sequins attached to a base fabric with adhesive backing. This adhesive backing eliminates the need for sewing each individual sequin, making it a convenient and cheaper option for adding sparkle to your projects. However, sewing with adhesive sequin fabric comes with its own set of challenges and considerations due to that adhesive material.

Choosing the Right Equipment:

To sew with adhesive sequin fabric successfully, you'll need the appropriate tools:

  • Sewing machine: A standard sewing machine should work for sewing with adhesive sequin material. A heavy duty sewing machine would work as well.
  • Thread: Opt for a strong, durable thread that matches the color of your sequin fabric
  • Needles: Use sharp needles designed for sewing through heavy or thick fabrics to prevent breakage. I used a titanium needle. Some guides mention using a MicroTex needle which is a very sharp needle. Play around with a test swatch to see which needle works best on your machine.
  • Cutting tools: Sharp scissors or a rotary cutter with a cutting mat will make it easier to cut through the adhesive backing without damaging the sequins. Note: the adhesive backing may get on your scissors or rotary cutter so be prepared to clean it with a makeup remover wipe or use older supplies in case of damage
  • Wax Paper: This helps add a buffer layer between your sewing machine needle and the adhesive fabric to help reduce the amount of glue that gets on your needle.
  • Makeup Remover Wipes: The needle, scissors, and other sewing supplies may get glue on them from the sequins. I found makeup remover wipes work great to remove the build up.
  • Quilting Clips (Wonder Clips): Use clips instead of pins to help reduce the glue build up on your supplies and prevent any damage to your sequins!

Preparing the Fabric:

Before you start sewing, be sure to run through some test swatches to understand how your fabric will react to sewing.
  • Test out the sequins to better understand how secure they are on your fabric.
  • Trim excess backing: Use sharp scissors to trim any excess backing around the edges of the fabric to reduce bulk.
  • Handle with care: Adhesive sequin fabric can be delicate, so handle it with care to avoid damaging the sequins or causing them to come loose.

Sewing Techniques:

Sewing with adhesive sequin fabric requires some adjustments to your usual sewing techniques. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
  • Use a longer stitch length: A longer stitch length (around 3 mm) will help prevent skipped stitches and reduce the risk of needle breakage.
  • Sew slowly and steadily: Take your time when sewing through adhesive sequin fabric to ensure accurate stitching and avoid damaging the sequins.
  • Backstitch at the beginning and end of seams: This will secure the stitches and prevent them from coming undone.
  • Take breaks and clean your needle as needed to prevent damaging the thread or fabric
