FABRIC SELECTION
This pattern has been tested using quilting cottons. Quilting cottons can be purchased from fabric stores, online stores, and more. This pattern has not been tested for stretch materials.
This pattern includes an appliqued spider. If you are a beginner sewist, or looking for an easier way to do the pattern, I suggest cutting out the spider in felt. If using the smaller spider pattern (Pattern Piece B), I also recommend doing this with felt to keep it easier to work with.
CUTTING OUT MATERIALS
One pillow (this pattern can be adjusted based on the size of your pillow)
One piece of cotton fabric to cover the front of the pillow
For example, if you have a 16x16 inch (40.64x 40.64 cm) pillow cut out a piece of fabric for the front that is 18x18 inch (45.72x 45.72 cm)
One piece of cotton fabric to cover the back of the pillow
For example, if you have a 16x16 inch (40.64x 40.64 cm) pillow cut out a piece of fabric for the back that is 18x18 inch (45.72x 45.72 cm)
One zipper (The zipper should be the width of the pillow)
Scrap contrasting fabric of Pattern Piece A or B
Pattern Piece A is a larger spider and Pattern Piece B is a smaller spider depending on the size of your pillow
If you are using Pattern Piece B, or are a beginner I would suggest using felt for the spider
Optional: 7x7 inch (17.78x 17.78 cm) piece of light to medium weight interfacing if using cotton fabric for Pattern Piece A (NOT NEEDED IF USING FELT)
One to two spools of ribbon
Thread
Sewing Machine
Pins
Fabric Shears
Optional: Serger/Pinking Shears/Bias tape to finish off edges if desired
Tape Measure
Iron
SEWING THE Pillow Case
Common Practices:
All seams are done in a straight stitch unless otherwise stated
½ inch (1.27 cm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated
Be sure to back stitch all seams (more information in Sewing Machine Manual)
Types of Scissors
When sewing, it is best to have a set of shears (or scissors) for cutting out fabric, and a separate set for cutting out paper/anything else. Cutting out paper over time dulls the scissor blades leading to them being ineffective at cutting through fabric. Having two separate sets will allow your shears or fabric scissors to last longer!
Describing the Fabric
This pattern will refer to the right side and the wrong side of the fabric. The right side of the fabric is the brighter color/pattern of the material that you want showing on the outside of your quilt.
Describing the Zipper
This pattern will refer to the right side and the wrong side of the zipper. The right side is what you see when you zip up the pouch and has the zipper pull. The wrong side has the back of the zipper pull
Washing Material
When shopping for your fabric, I would recommend washing it before using. Some cotton fabrics have a tendency to shrink, so this can prevent shrinkage in your final piece. Also check the manufacturer's instructions to ensure the best way of maintaining your fabric.
Sewing a Zipper Edge
Depending on the size of your pillow, the zipper may not be the full length of your pillow
If this is the case, when you get to step 9 you will need to sew before and after the zipper. To ensure you get nice and clean edges (and cannot see the zipper raw edges) be sure to sew to the left of the seam for where you sewed the zipper on.
Steps
Cut out the fabric for the front and back of your pillow so you have two rectangles. In addition, using Pattern Piece A for a larger spider or Pattern Piece B for a smaller spider, cut out the fabric spider. If you are a beginner, I would highly recommend using felt for this step. To cut out the spider, fold your contrasting fabric in half, and place the pattern piece on the fold. Pin the pattern in place and cut the spider out. Do not cut the fold. If using Pattern Piece A with cotton fabric, cut out a piece of interfacing as well with the pattern piece. Be sure to transfer all markings for the eyes of the spider (I use thread for this).
Prepare the pillowcase fabrics by finishing off the edges using a serger, pinking shears, or a rolled hem for each edge. If needed, press the fabric and attach interfacing to the spider.
With the front of the pillowcase, begin arranging the ribbon in a spider web pattern. I went with a design where the ribbon came from one corner and formed a burst pattern. When the ribbon is in a pleasing pattern, begin pinning it down to hold it in place.
Sew each piece of ribbon on the pillowcase. I sewed down one long edge of the ribbon and then sewed the second long edge to create a parallel seam. Repeat this for each piece of ribbon until your spider web is built out.
Determine where you want your spider to go on your pillowcase, and pin it in place. If using felt, sew the spider on following the pattern of the spider and taking a straight seam. If using a cotton fabric, use a zig-zag stitch to attach the spider onto the pillowcase by sewing along each edge of the spider. Take your time and pivot the spider along the way to ensure all edges are sewn on.
With the spider attached to the pillowcase, it is time to add the button eyes. Hand sew the eyes on where you added the markings earlier. I double threaded the needle so it would be more secure, but feel free to hand sew the buttons on however is easier for you. Once attached, the front of the pillowcase is complete.
Next, match one right side edge of the zipper with the right side edge of the pillowcase. I added the zipper to the short edge of the pillowcase. Pin the zipper to the fabric edge and take a seam.
Repeat this for the back of the pillowcase by matching the right side of the zipper with the right side of the back of the pillowcase. Take a seam.
Unzip the zipper and place the front and back of the pillowcase with right sides together. Pin the three edges and any opening on either side of the zipper and take a seam all the way around. When sewing, be sure to pivot the fabric at each corner by keeping the needle down in the fabric, lifting up the presser foot, and turning the fabric.
Trim any threads, and turn the pillowcase right side out. Place the pillowcase on the pillow!
At this point your pillowcase is complete! Be sure to check out my YouTube channel for a full video walk through (https://youtu.be/65WlyPCkrUw)! Happy Halloween!!
